A Small Toolkit of Creative Exercises

26.05.2023
Creative exercises can offer a possibility to act differently, differing from the ordinary ways to start lessons. This can help the educators and students to support wellbeing and sense of togetherness and to have fun.

In the ARTHEWE project we have developed some good creative practices and exercises when working online or live with students to support their learning process, wellbeing and promoting deeper learning experiences that consider different senses and different ways to learn.

According to our experiences it is usually beneficial and nice to start an online or live learning session with some creative exercise. ‘Creative’ means here a way to “act differently” – differing from the normal routines, from the ordinary ways to start lessons, from linear thinking, from convergent problem solving, from neglecting bodily sensations etc.

This can help the educator(s) and the participants/students:

– to tune in to working in a group

– to get to know the group members or other participants in a deeper/different way

– to focus their attention to learning

– to focus their attention to their whole body and activate the whole body in the learning process (not just head and hands), helping the participants to appreciate different ways to perceive and act; different ways to interact

– to promote diverse views and viewpoints

– to activate creativity and divergent thinking

– to support wellbeing and sense of togetherness

– to have fun

– to share more openly their thoughts and ideas

– to create safe space and atmosphere to participate differently than usually.

We have created a small toolkit of creative exercises you can use online. Most of them are suitable for using also onsite. The exercises are developed and tested with our ARTHEWE developer students from Turku UAS and with ARTHEWE project team members. You can have access to the toolkit’s exercises by clicking the name of the exercise below.

The exercises of the toolkit are:

1. Alien, Cow, Tiger

2. Body Travelling with Colors

3. Creative Hands that Carry Stories

4. Let’s Draw Together!

5. Music as a Mirror

6. Speed Dating Croquis.
